Drywall Installation Made Easy

Drywall panels are a construction material professionals use to make walls and ceilings. They also utilize it to make a variety of design elements. This includes arches, eaves, and other architectural features. However, not everybody has the skills to install drywall. Doing so requires precision and a steady hand.

Fortunately, we can help! Our team of experts can install your drywalls without you having to lift a finger. You'll get a smooth, even finish that will look great and last for years.

The Key Things to Remember When Installing Drywall

In order to successfully install drywall, you need to consider certain things. Among these is the number of mechanical fasteners on the sheetrock panels and proper application of drywall compound.

Another thing to remember when installing drywall is to make sure the panels are properly attached together. You can do this by using nails or screws. Doing so will help the drywall panels remain securely in place while the compound dries.

In addition, when installing drywall make sure to check the seams of the panels for any gaps which might need filling. The goal here is to create a smooth and seamless wall or ceiling after installation is complete.

The Process of Installing Drywall

The process of drywall installation isn't an easy task. However, by following our guidelines, you should be able to successfully install your drywall in a short amount of time.

Step 1:

Preparation

Once you've received your drywall from the distributor, inspect the sheets carefully to make sure they're free from defects. Next, determine how it will best fit within your designated space. You can do this by cutting out pieces using a circular saw, or if you're working with large sheets, using a keyhole saw. Inspect the cutouts for any jagged edges to make sure your space is safe and hazard-free.

Step 2:

Protection

The installation of drywall needs to occur in an area that's clean and clear of anything that may inhibit the work. This means that you must move furniture and fixtures. Also, you must tape off anything that's on the floor to ensure a smoother installation.

Step 3:

Spreading Out

Once you have your space ready, blend out any seams between pieces of drywall using a 4-inch taping knife. Make sure to take note of any gaps, nicks or dents in your drywall and fill them in using a joint compound and a putty knife.

Step 4:

Covering the Joints

Using the 4-inch taping knife, cover all of your seams with a thin layer of joint compound to ensure that they're even and smooth. Make sure to wipe off any excess material from the top of your seams to give them a refined look.

Step 5:

Finishing Up

After you've let the compound dry, sand it down using a 5-inch drywall sanding block or wet/dry sandpaper wrapped around a sanding drum to eliminate any bumps from your wall. If you need to do some touch-up work, make sure to mix up some more joint compound and trowel it over the dents, nicks or other imperfections.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why do you hang drywall from the top down?

The reason why drywall is hung from the top, down is that it allows for a more even distribution of the drywall compound. If you were to start from the bottom up,  it would create a ridge higher up on the wall, and if you were to try and even this out, it would require several more layers of drywall compound. Hanging from the top down allows for a much easier application of compound that not only gets in to all the cracks but also will allow for a smoother finish as well.

  • How much does drywall installation cost?

Costs for installing drywall range from $996 to $2,891 throughout most cases. As such, materials and labor will cost between $1.50 and $3 per square foot. Depending on the number of rooms and the quality of finish, most homeowners pay $2 per square foot.

  • Can I do drywall installation on my own?

Although it's possible to DIY  drywall installation, we don't recommend it. The nature of drywall installation is that it needs to very precise in order to ensure a quality final product. Therefore, even though you may have the skills for this type of project, you would require the proper equipment for optimal results. It is much more cost-effective to hire professional drywallers for your project.

  • What are the tools required for drywall installation?

There are several pieces of equipment that are needed in order to install sheetrock, including a utility knife, straight edge, drill, stud finder, and tapcons. We also recommend a cordless drill/driver, as it will make the job easier and more precise.
