Long-lasting Solutions For Plaster Damage

Unexpected incidents may seriously affect plaster. Whether it's ceiling damage or plaster walls, failing to fix it can lead to all sorts of problems. This includes the build of cracks and mildew, which can pose a serious threat to your health and safety. Furthermore, it can also decrease property value when it comes time to sell your home or business. As such, hiring plaster repair specialists like us is essential. Whether it's water damage, loose plaster, or cracks in plaster, we can fix it for you!

The Importance of Plaster Repair

You may be thinking that repairing plaster is a job that you can put off until later. However, there are several reasons why it's important to repair your plaster as soon as possible.

Here are 3 reasons to repair your plaster:

  1. Plaster provides insulation and helps regulate the temperature of a room. If you see cracks or holes in your plaster, it can't do its job effectively and your energy bills will be higher.
  2. Plaster is a hard surface that is resistant to wear and tear, but it's not completely indestructible. If plaster walls aren't repaired immediately, the damage may become more severe over time.
  3. Failing to repair plaster can result in the wall being structurally unsound and unsafe. As a result, accidents such as plaster falling on someone's head are more likely to happen.

The Process of Plaster Repair

The first step is to prep the area. Remove any loose or flaking plaster. You may use a chisel and ball pein hammer. This will help chip away the damaged plaster. Once done, use a scraper to clear excess debris.

Once prepping is complete, use a ready-mix base-coat plaster. Apply the mixture with a wallboard knife and spread it over the damage. Next, apply a second layer before letting the plaster dry.

When the second layer dries, add mixed joint compound. This helps smooth out the surface, creates a seamless finish, and covers up any other imperfections. Afterward, sand the entire area for an even finish. Finally, prime and paint the area to match your existing color or décor.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are the damage warning signs of plaster?

If your start to notice cracks, holes, mold, or leaks, it's time to act fast. Ignoring the signs can lead to serious plaster issues that would require extensive repair work later on. Plaster repair can fix cosmetic damages and make your walls or ceilings look good as new.

  • What techniques can I follow for plaster repair?

Depending on the type of damage your plaster has, you may follow several repair techniques. The following are some of the best ones:

    Hairline Cracks

Remove the loose material and fill the crack with a coat or two of joint or spackling compound (or use an elastomeric product like Krack Kote). Krack Kote is a great option because it expands and contracts with the plaster. As such, the crack won't worsen over time.

Once the spackling compound has set, sand it down with fine-grit paper so that it matches the surrounding plaster surface. Smooth out the patch with a damp sponge and paint over it to hide any blemishes or marks left behind by wet sanding.

    Wide Cracks

Use the tape and "float" technique for bigger cracks or previous crack fixes that have failed. To make sure the plaster isn't shifting, press hard on both sides of the crack. After that, check to determine if one side of the crack has a higher relief than the other. When this is the case, you'll need to make some adjustments.

First, use a utility knife or chisel blade to undercut the high side of the crack by approximately ¼ inch (this will create a ledge for the patch).

Next, apply a coat of adhesive plaster (like Durabond 45) to the low side of the crack using a putty knife.

Then, press the patching plaster onto the adhesive and use a float or trowel to smooth it out. Finally, let the patch dry completely before sanding and painting.

    Map Cracking or Extensive Cracks

In the event that there is an extensive network of cracks, commonly referred to as map cracks, cover the walls with strips of adhesive-backed fiberglass mesh with an elastomeric coating, such as Nu-Wal. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions. Once the product is in place,  skimcoat the surface with patching material to create a smooth, paintable finish.
